Side by Side

Side by Side
‘Side by Side’

I completed ‘Side by Side‘ some time ago now.  The stone is soapstone so it was a very soft stone to carve, almost like cutting through oil.

Another sculptor had been working on this piece of stone to create an abstract sculpture when it broke unexpectedly.  Their misfortune was my gain as they no longer wanted to use the stone.  I found the stone very appealing to touch and on that very first grasp, the way that I held the stone essentially ended up as what you see here in the picture.  My hands were the model and the maker at the same time!
